When Good Things Become God Things
Drawing from the account of the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11, this sermon explores the human tendency to take good gifts from God and elevate them into ultimate sources of identity, worth, security, and belonging. The pastor establishes that humanity was uniquely created in the image of God to create, imagine, and co-labor with God in the world -- a calling described as vocation. However, when the things we build with our hands and our lives become the source of what only God can provide, those good gifts become destructive idols. The people of Babel refused God's mandate to scatter and fill the earth, choosing instead to build a city and a tower to make a name for themselves. This act of rebellion mirrors what people do today when they look to careers, relationships, finances, status, health, or even things they long for but do not yet have to define who they are and prove that they matter. The sermon calls listeners to receive their identity, worth, security, approval, belonging, and legacy as gifts already given through Christ, so that they can work from their identity rather than for their identity.
