What Are You Running From? The Jacob Story | Hall of Faith
Drawing from the life of Jacob in Genesis, this sermon explores how God pursues, transforms, and redeems people who are running from their past. Jacob, whose name means "heel grabber" or deceiver, spent much of his life taking matters into his own hands, deceiving his brother Esau and others around him, and living as a man on the run. Yet God never abandoned him. Through a mysterious nighttime wrestling encounter, God dislocated Jacob's hip, stripped away his self-reliance, and gave him a new name and identity: Israel. The central message is that God does not simply want to change our circumstances; he wants to change who we are at our core. Transformation precedes reconciliation, and the new identity God gives us enables us to see others as image-bearers of God, extending grace where we once expected conflict. Just as Jacob's story points forward to Christ, who traveled from heaven to earth to reconcile humanity to God, believers are invited to stop running, wrestle honestly with God, and return to the people and situations they have been avoiding.
