What Happened The Moment JESUS Claimed to Be God?

Apr 26, 2026    Matt Dyck

This powerful message confronts us with the most audacious claim Jesus ever made: 'Before Abraham was, I am.' We explore the profound moment in John 8 where Jesus doesn't just claim to be older than Abraham or even to have existed before creation—He identifies Himself using the sacred name of God revealed to Moses at the burning bush. When God told Moses 'I AM WHO I AM' (Yahweh), He was declaring Himself as the source of all existence, the uncreated one, life itself. The Hebrew name Yahweh literally means 'He is'—He's Him. When Jesus applies this name to Himself, He's making an unmistakable declaration of divinity. The people listening understood exactly what He meant, which is why they picked up stones to kill Him for blasphemy. This message challenges us with a critical choice: we cannot simply dismiss Jesus as a good teacher or wise philosopher. His claims are too extreme, too egocentric. We must either reject Him entirely or recognize Him as God incarnate and respond accordingly. The invitation is clear—when we encounter the living God, we must take off our shoes, surrendering everything we think defines us—our successes, failures, identities, and pride—because we're standing on holy ground.
